Introduction
Pro Tools handles outboard better than any other DAW, and it is not close. Hardware inserts are a first-class feature: you define them once in I/O Setup, and from then on a piece of outboard drops onto a track exactly like a plugin. Delay compensation is handled for you, provided you tell Pro Tools how long the trip takes.
This guide covers defining insert paths, placing them on tracks, calibrating the delay, and committing the result so the session stays reproducible.
What you need
- An interface with spare outputs and inputs, wired to your gear.
- Pro Tools with Delay Compensation available. It is on by default in current versions.
- Outboard with matched line levels. Most pro interfaces run +4 dBu.
Defining a hardware insert path
- Open Setup > I/O and go to the Insert tab.
- Click New Path and give it the name of the gear, not the port number. "1176" is useful six months later; "Insert 3-4" is not.
- Set the format: mono for a single channel of outboard, stereo for a linked pair.
- Map it to the physical output and input pair the gear is wired to. Pro Tools assumes the send and return use the same numbered pair.
- Click OK. The path now appears in every track's insert selector under Hardware.
Name the paths carefully. On a busy session with several pieces of outboard, sensible names are the difference between a fast recall and a confusing one.
Calibrating the delay
Pro Tools will compensate for the round trip, but only if it knows how long the round trip is. It does not measure this on its own.
- Open Setup > Playback Engine and find H/W Insert Delay (sometimes listed as Hardware Insert Delay Compensation).
- Enter the round-trip delay in milliseconds for each insert path.
- To measure it, send a sharp transient out through the path with the gear bypassed, record the return, and compare positions. Convert the sample offset to milliseconds.
- Make sure Delay Compensation itself is enabled under the Options menu.
Get this right once and every hardware insert in the session lines up automatically. Get it wrong and everything through that path sits slightly late, which reads as a loss of punch rather than an obvious timing error, so it is easy to miss.
Using the insert
Click any insert slot on a track, choose your hardware path, and the audio now leaves Pro Tools, passes through the gear, and returns in place. Fader, automation and routing all behave normally.
- Only one track can use a given hardware path at a time. The gear is physical; it cannot be in two places.
- To process a group, put the hardware insert on an aux or a bus rather than each channel.
- For parallel processing, send to an aux with the hardware insert and blend it against the dry track.
Committing the sound
A hardware insert is live. Open the session tomorrow with the gear switched off or the knobs moved and it sounds different. Commit before that becomes a problem.
- Use Track > Commit to print the processed audio to a new track. Keep the original.
- Commit at 24-bit, session sample rate.
- Photograph the settings. Recall sheets are old fashioned and they still work.
- Once committed, free the hardware path for the next source.
Common problems
- Sounds late or lifeless. H/W Insert Delay is not set for that path.
- No audio. The path is mapped to the wrong physical pair, or another track already has the insert active.
- Distortion. Level mismatch between the interface and the gear. Check +4 dBu against -10 dBV.
- Hum. Ground loop. Balanced cables and a shared power source usually fix it.
- Phase issues in parallel. The dry path is not delay-compensated to match. Bus both sides through equivalent routing.
Used properly, hardware inserts in Pro Tools feel no different from plugins, and that is the point. The workflow should get out of the way so you can judge whether the box is actually improving the record.
