Mixing vs Mastering: What’s the Difference?

People use the words interchangeably, but mixing and mastering are two different jobs that happen in a specific order. Understanding the difference tells you exactly what your song needs, and stops you paying for the wrong thing.

What mixing is

Mixing is working with the individual tracks of your song, the separate vocal, drum, bass and instrument recordings. The mix engineer balances their levels, shapes their tone with EQ, controls them with compression, adds space with reverb and delay, and automates the movement of the song. Mixing turns a pile of separate recordings into one cohesive record where every element has its place.

What mastering is

Mastering happens after mixing, on the finished stereo file. The mastering engineer treats the song as a single whole: balancing its overall tone, controlling its dynamics, and raising it to a competitive, streaming-safe loudness. Mastering is the final polish that makes your track sound consistent and professional on every system, and consistent with the other songs on your project.

The order, and why it matters

Always mix first, master second. You can’t master your way out of a bad mix, mastering refines a finished mix, it can’t rebalance the parts inside it. If your vocal is buried, that’s a mixing fix, not a mastering one. This is the single most common misunderstanding we hear from artists.

Do you need both?

For a proper release, yes. A great mix that isn’t mastered will sound quiet and inconsistent next to commercial tracks. A master applied to a weak mix just makes the problems louder. The two work together, which is exactly why our mixing and mastering service handles both in one coherent pass.
