Bringing Outboard Analog Gear Into a Logic Pro Session

Route hardware into Logic Pro the right way. Learn the I/O plugin, hardware insert setup, latency compensation, and how to commit your analog sound with Bounce in Place.

Introduction

FL Studio has no dedicated hardware-insert plugin the way Logic and Pro Tools do. That puts people off using outboard with it, and it should not. The routing is all there in the Mixer, it is just done manually, and once you have set it up once it takes about thirty seconds to do again.

The idea is simple. A Mixer insert sends audio out of your interface into a piece of hardware, the hardware processes it, and the signal comes back into a different Mixer insert. What FL Studio will not do for you is line the returning audio back up in time. You have to measure that offset once and compensate for it, and that single step is what separates a tight analog chain from a smeared one.

What you need

Line level matters more than people expect. Most interfaces run at +4 dBu and a lot of affordable outboard runs at -10 dBV. If your gear has a level switch, match it to the interface. If it does not, expect to compensate with input and output gain and accept a slightly worse noise floor.

Routing a track out to hardware and back

Work in the Mixer. The send insert carries audio to the hardware, the return insert catches what comes back.

  1. Route the channel you want to process to a Mixer insert, say Insert 1.
  2. With Insert 1 selected, open the OUT section on the right of the Mixer and pick the hardware output pair your gear is plugged into. Turn OFF the master send on that insert, otherwise you will hear the dry signal alongside the processed one.
  3. Select an empty insert, say Insert 2. In the IN section, choose the hardware input pair your gear returns to.
  4. Leave Insert 2 routed to the master. That is your processed signal.

At this point you should hear audio through the hardware. If you hear nothing, the usual causes are the wrong output pair, a muted return insert, or gear that is set to bypass.

Measuring the round-trip latency

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that matters. Every trip out through a converter and back adds delay: typically a few milliseconds, but the exact figure depends on your interface and buffer size. FL Studio does not compensate for it automatically on an external loop.

  1. Make a short, sharp sound at the very start of an empty pattern. A single click or a snare hit with no reverb is ideal.
  2. Send it out through the hardware, bypassing any processing so the shape stays intact, and record the return onto an audio track.
  3. Zoom right in and compare the recorded transient with the original. The gap between them, in samples, is your round-trip latency.
  4. Note that number. It stays valid until you change buffer size or interface.

From then on, every time you print through that chain, nudge the recorded audio earlier by that amount. In Edison, or on the playlist with snapping off, shifting by the measured offset puts the processed take exactly back in time with the rest of the session.

Printing the result

Outboard cannot be recalled by a project file. Whatever the knobs were set to when you printed is what you have, which is why committing early and keeping the dry take is the safe habit.

Common problems

Is it worth it?

Honestly, for a lot of records, no. A good plugin chain used well beats hardware used badly, every time. Outboard earns its place when a specific box does something you cannot get otherwise, and when you are willing to commit to that sound rather than keep every option open.

Where it genuinely pays off is on the things that carry a record: a lead vocal through a good preamp and compressor, drums through a bus compressor, a mix through a decent EQ. If you are reaching for hardware on every channel, the setup time will cost you more than the sound gains you.
